Sally on the Hilltop (Trad. Scottish/ Irish)

By Elisa Sereno-Janz

Glen Orchy is a beautiful valley north and a little west of Glasgow. Top the Candle is a slip jig, which is a jig in 9/8 that I found in “O’Niell’s 1001 Irish Dance Tunes.” It has a wonderful lilt, and to see people dance a slip jig, the music is on the slower side, but their feet move very fast! Sally Hunter of Thurston was written by Nathaniel Gow, (1763-1831) a Scottish fiddler, and son of fiddler Neil Gow.
